Hammershus blev opført i begyndelsen af det 13. århundrede, sandsynligvis omkring 1255, og blev oprindeligt bygget af ærkebiskop Jakob Erlandsen af Lund som et forsvarsværk mod de danske konger og som et symbol på kirkens magt.
